As of September 2008, Honda has announced plans to relaunch the Insight as a 5 door, 5 seater Hatchback…Read all about it.
Production of the hybrid began in 1999 and halted in 2006 when vehicle sales were trumped by the Toyota Prius hybrid.
Vehicle Setbacks:
The fact that the hybrid is a two-seater is arguably the reason why sales dwindled in in 2005 and 2006.
The NIHM battery back in the Insight has since needed replacement. However there are options. Honda is offering free replacement on Insights with up to 150,000 miles. If the vehicle doesn’t qualify for Honda’s replacement plan other options include spending roughly 5000 dollars for a new battery. As explained at Wikipedia: “As of September 2007, one dealer quote is US$5000. Garage mechanics have recently started attempting replacing Insight batteries with either Prius sub-packs or Civic Hybrid subpacks… [as of] Mar 2008, the Civic Hybrid subpacks appear to be a direct replacement at an affordable $300 per used battery pack due to larger production volumes.”
Readers stay tuned…Honda Insight can be modified to 100 MPG’s and Pump N Go is all over it. Stay tuned as the story develops.
